The holiday season transforms cities into magical wonderlands, with twinkling lights, festive decorations, and a palpable sense of joy. For food lovers, this is also the perfect time to indulge in unforgettable dining experiences. Whether you’re a local looking for a festive outing or a traveler seeking culinary adventure, here are some top holiday restaurant experiences in major cities across the country.

New York City – Rolf’s German Restaurant

Known as the epitome of holiday dining, Rolf’s German Restaurant in Manhattan is famous for its over-the-top Christmas décor. The entire restaurant is draped in ornaments, lights, and garlands, creating an immersive holiday experience.  According to 6sqft.com, "Beginning the last week of September, a six-man team starts the process of adorning Rolf’s German Restaurant with 15,000 Christmas ornaments, 10,000 lights, and thousands of icicles." The lines wrap around the block, but if you make it inside, diners indulge in hearty German fare like schnitzel and sauerbraten while sipping on mulled wine or eggnog. Make sure to book a reservation well in advance — it’s a hot spot during the holidays.

Chicago – The Walnut Room

Located inside Macy’s on State Street, The Walnut Room is a Chicago holiday tradition dating back to 1907. The centerpiece of this iconic restaurant is its 45-foot Christmas tree, beautifully decorated and admired by diners. Enjoy classic dishes like pot pie or roasted turkey while basking in the glow of the holiday ambiance. It’s a perfect spot for family outings or a festive lunch after holiday shopping.

Boston – Oak Long Bar + Kitchen

Set within the historic Fairmont Copley Plaza, Oak Long Bar + Kitchen provides a luxurious holiday dining experience. The décor is sophisticated, with touches of holiday cheer that complement its grand setting. Guests can enjoy dishes like lobster bisque and braised short ribs, paired with seasonal cocktails. It’s an ideal spot for a celebratory dinner or an elegant brunch during the holiday season.

Atlanta – The Garden Room

The Garden Room is Atlanta’s go-to destination for whimsical, holiday-themed dining. Known for its stunning floral décor year-round, the restaurant elevates its ambiance during the holidays with twinkling lights and seasonal installations. The menu features inventive dishes like truffle pasta and wagyu sliders, making it a treat for both the eyes and the palate. It also won an award from Atlanta AIA in the category of new restaurant construction. See photo below on left.

Seattle – Canlis

Canlis offers a fine-dining holiday experience with breathtaking views of Seattle and Lake Union. (Just click the link to see a quick video of it.) The mid-century modern space is adorned with understated holiday elegance, creating a serene and luxurious atmosphere. The seasonal tasting menu highlights Pacific Northwest ingredients, with dishes like Dungeness crab and venison. Live piano music adds to the festive yet refined ambiance. According to The Opulist, Canlis is a restaurant that feels like Christmas. See center photo above.

Dallas – The French Room

Located in the Adolphus Hotel, The French Room is a crown jewel of Dallas dining, especially during the holidays. With its opulent décor and impeccable service, it’s a perfect place for a special celebration. Holiday-themed afternoon teas are a popular draw, as are the elegant multi-course dinners featuring dishes like foie gras and duck confit. See photo above on right.

Washington, D.C. – The Hamilton

The Hamilton goes all out during the holiday season, offering live music alongside its expansive menu. The restaurant’s warm and inviting ambiance is enhanced with festive decorations, making it a popular spot for holiday gatherings. Don’t miss the seasonal specialties like pumpkin ravioli or bourbon-glazed ham.

Washington, D.C. – Ivy and Coney This Shaw neighborhood bar is hosting its annual Hanukkah Extravaganza. Expect latkes and sufganiyot in the form of a shot (amazingly, the shot of liquor actually tastes like a jelly donut). Bar staff will be lighting a menorah each night during the eight days of Hanukkah. But, the good news is Ivy and Coney will be celebrating for one month of crazy nights. See details.

Similarly the Maccabee Bar has been opening in NYC and Boston since 2018. They have yet to announce their locations for the 2024 season, but according to Instagram it's coming soon.

From coast to coast, these restaurants offer unique ways to celebrate the season. Whether you’re drawn to extravagant decorations, luxurious menus, or warm, festive atmospheres, these holiday dining experiences are sure to create lasting memories. Be sure to check availability and make reservations early — the best spots fill up quickly this time of year!
